I may be in the minority but I like the idea of red light cameras at some of Northern Virginia's busy intersections. I think they make people more aware of the danger of running red lights. Sure, some people get rear ended, but then, that means everyone has to pay more attention.
The Virginia State Senate passed legislation yesterday to restore the red lights at some Northern Virginia intersections.
Look, I understand the argument that sometimes the owner of a car gets a ticket in the mail when the owner wasn't driving. That just means you have to be careful who you lend your car too and, in my case, it might mean one of my kids ran a red light. Now I know about it.
Good.
Sen. Jeannemarie Devolites Davis, Fairfax County Republican, told colleagues that her bill would allow photo-red enforcement only in Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun counties, the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church and Virginia Beach and the town of Vienna.

Let's see, you are a personal injury attorney, so that means you will make money related to all of the inevitable rear end, neck injury, collisions you admit to?Red Light cams are simply a giant revenue raiser for localities and the companies that supply the technology (yet will localities lower our real property taxes, of course not); increase the risk of severe neck and back injuries; put additional wear and tear on vehicles that brake or speed through the intersection to avoid being photographed (e.g. charged with a violation); are one more step to a big brother society.Red light cameras were voted out of existence in Virginia at mid-2005 for very good reason, and it is sad to see them being brought back.Oh, and Mr. Personal Injury lawyer, you really should put a little more trust in your children, rather than relying on big-brother to monitor them through pervasive privacy infringing technology.
Always interesting to see folks take the time to write down their comments and then use false names and fake e-mail addresses. I've seen enough families devastated by drivers running red light to realize that red light cameras are a good idea. At one point I did feel like the writer above, but it now appears that those who are not in favor of red light cameras seem to be saying, "I am in favor of running through red lights."
