The idiots running Little League baseball

There is an interesting article in Sunday's Washington Post. It seems that the father of an eight-year-old Little League or was umpiring game, most probably as a volunteer, when a situation occurred that caused him to want to go look up the official rules in the Little League rulebook. He checked the Little League website first with no success. To make a long story very short what he found out is that Little League baseball no longer makes the "rules of the game" available to "just anyone."

What? A father and his child team to get a hold of the rulebook that tells them both whether a ball at its third base and goes foul is to be declared a hit or a foul ball? What a bunch of idiots. It seems that the Little League rulebook contains "secrets" that the official Little League doesn't want anyone, including players and volunteer umpires, to know.

I'm sorry, this is another example of adult and idiocy taking over youth sports. When I was Little League age he was impressed upon us that it was our duty to learn the rules. I loved reading the rulebook and still do. It is a part of learning a sport.

I won't even go into that part of the article that discusses the secret rules of selection of all-star players and managers. I find it incredibly unbelievable that parents can get so wound up in a game meant for young kids that they can't just let them play without secret meetings in secret ballots.

I'm not surprised. This has been going on for a few years now. The problem seems to have started with people pointing out the the contridictions in the rules and of course where not given satisfactory answers.

It goes on in the majors to. The back line on the batters box. The bock rule a few years ago.

It is the nature of American society for the rules/laws not to mean what they say.

It definitely is the nature of American society for the rules not to mean what they say but that shouldn't carry over to something like Little League. Even when I played 20 years ago, I still remember as much time being spent arguing between parents and umps as actually learning how to play baseball. There really needs to be some changes made.
