According to new published studies there's now another risk for those undergoing gastric bypass surgery: it may only take one drink to become legally intoxicated. This should be a clear warning to gastric bypass patients who consider drinking and driving.

Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine conducted the testng by giving 19 post-operative gastric bypass patients and 17 control subjects 5 ounces each of red wine. They were told to drink their wine within 15 minutes. Each subject then had their breath-alcohol level measured every five minutes until levels reached zero.

The gastric bypass patients not only reached legal intoxication but stay intoxicated longer. Apparently the surgery alters the body's alcohol metabolism.

Gastric bypass patients already face substantial risks when undergoing the surgery.
